Wednesday, September 20th, 2017 | Academic

On behalf of the Board of Governors and St George’s College, I would like to welcome John Farrelly as the new Headmaster, who assumes his position on 1st January 2018.

Having worked with John for the past 18 months as our Deputy Headmaster, he meets the criteria necessary to take St George’s College forward at a time when the School is generating positive energy through various new developments and initiatives.

Below are some highlights of John’s professional background:

  • Graduated from Sheffield Hallam University (UK) with a BSC (Hons) in Biochemistry
  • National Health Service (UK) for six years as a Biochemist including a post-graduate qualification
  • University of York (UK), Post Graduate Certificate of Education
  • Taught in Zimbabwean government schools for five years as part of Voluntary Service Overseas project from the UK
  • Taught Science in Cartagena, Colombia, for two years
  • Started at St George’s in 1998, teaching Science and Chemistry, HOD, Head of Athletics and Sixth Form Line teacher throughout this period
  • Married for 32 years to Pip, who teaches at Harare International School as International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme Coordinator
  • Hobbies include reading, listening to music, gardening and distance running. John will be competing in the London Marathon in April 2018 for the third time

John has already received a very warm welcome from staff, students, parents, Alumni and the Jesuit community in Zimbabwe and Mozambique.  We pledge our support for him and look ahead to greater achievements for our School.

I would like to express my gratitude to Kevin Atkinson as he retires at the end of this year.
